Glossary of terms

Explosive Ordnance (EO)
All munitions containing explosives, nuclear fission or fusion materials and biological and chemical agents, this includes bombs and warheads, guided and ballistic missiles, artillery, mortar, rocket and small arms ammunition, all mines, torpedoes and depth charges, demolition stores, pyrotechnics, clusters and dispensers, cartridges and propellant actuated devices, electro explosive devices, clandestine and improvised explosive devices and all similar or related items or components explosive in nature.
Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO)
Explosive ordnance which has been primed, fuzed, armed or otherwise prepared for action, and which has been fired, dropped, launched, projected in such a manner as to constitute a hazard to operations, installations, personnel or material and remains unexploded either by malfunction or design or for any other cause.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
The detection, identification, field evaluation, rendering safe, recovery and final disposal of UXO. It may also include the rendering safe and/or disposal of explosive ordnance which has become hazardous by damage or deterioration when the disposal of such explosive ordnance is beyond the capabilities of personnel assigned the responsibility for its routine disposal.
Improvised Explosive Device (IED)
Those devices placed or fabricated in an improvised manner incorporating destructive, lethal, noxious, pyrotechnic, o incendiary chemicals designed to destroy, disfigure, distract or harass.
Counter Terrorist Search (CTS)
Is the use of systematic procedures to locate any terrorist resource including personnel, hides, munitions, documents, equipment, bombs and booby traps.

Advanced Search (HRS) CTS is classified high risk when there is either known to be, or special reason to believe that a bomb or booby trap (explosive or otherwise) is present.
Basic Search (LRS)
CTS is classified low risk when there is no special reason to believe that a bomb or booby trap (explosive or otherwise) is present.
Demining
Activities which lead to the removal of mine and UXO hazards, including technical survey, mapping, clearance, marking, post clearance documentation, community mine action liaison and the handover of cleared land. Demining may be carried out by different types of organisations such as NGOs, commercial companies, national mine action teams or military units. Demining may be emergency based or developmental.
Terminology
Extract – To remove the fuzing component fitted to EOD
De-arm – To disrupt the fuzing components preventing its correct functioning
Disruptors or Injectors - are low velocity weapons designed to forcibly separate (disrupt) an IED into its component parts, with minimal damage and with a high probability of avoiding a detonation or explosion.
Partial Detonation - Low Order, Deflagration.
A complete detonation at lower than normal velocity has occurred or an incomplete detonation has taken place. In the latter case, the initiating shock wave does not have enough energy to maintain the chain reaction detonation. Therefore, the detonation wave dies away before all the explosive has detonated and the remaining explosive is thrown around.
Full detonation or High Order.
In this case, sufficient energy (shock) is provided so that complete detonation of all the explosive material is accomplished at maximum detonation velocity. Either the ordnance has functioned as designed, or an attempt to open the case and scatter the explosive (Low Order) has failed.
